Designing a console for things that take time

Runs are timelines, not log files. Notes from rebuilding the Ostrid console around a single time axis.

The first Ostrid console was a log viewer. Lines, timestamps, a search box. It answered what happened, but not when, or for how long.

One axis

The new console puts every run on a single horizontal time axis. Steps are bars, tool calls are gaps, and the slow part of a run is visible from across the room.

We borrowed the idea from photo-finish cameras: one thin slit, recording only what crosses it, laid side by side.
